Our senior footballers played Athlone in a challenge game in Athlone on Friday night last. Saints left corner forward Stephen Quirke scored a fine point from play in the fifth minute. Athlone scored a goal almost immediately. Again Stephen Quirke scored a point from play. Athlone replied with a white flag. Paudie Mulhare who was playing very well at full forward kicked a massive point and left forward Joe Carroll followed up with a great point on the 15 minute mark. On the 20 minute “the score of the match” right corner forward Odhrán McIntyre gained possession 30 metres out beating 3 Athlone defenders to send a pile diver to the Athlone net. Soon after Paudie Mulhare scored another great point from play and on the 25 minute centre forward Gary Mahon lofted over a great point from play. Athlone scored a point from play to leave the half time score St. Rynaghs 1-6 Athlone 1-3. In the second half Athlone had three points in succession two from play and one from a 30 metre free. Odhrán McIntyre scored a point from play to open the saints second half scoring, again Athlone responded with a point from play, Athlone were dominating the game at this stage and scored a point from a 30 metre free. In the 20th minute Athlone scored a penalty which was controversial to say the least as saints goalkeeper Paddy Wynne was fouled in the first instance. Joe Carroll took the sting out of the Athlone goal with a fine point from play. There was no doubt about Athlone’s third goal after a brilliant four man movement the ball ended up in the saints net. Gary Mahon pointed a 21m free and before the final whistle sub Ciaran Flannery scored a great point from play to leave the final score Athlone 3-8 St. Rynaghs 1-10.

It was a fabulous game of free flowing football with some great scores taken by both teams on the night. Paddy Wynne played very well in goals making three great saves.
