Social Dancing

Our social dance which took place on Friday night 5th April was a marvelous success.  There was a great turn out which was greatly appreciated.  This success is down to the hard work of Gary Daly, PJ Camon and John Keegan. A special word of thanks to James Christie for supplying extra lighting on the night.  Also thanks to Jackie Coughlan and Siobhan Doyle for all their help.  We had a visit from Jim Loughman of Stella FM who was promoting the new radio station which will take in areas such as Birr, Lorrha, Roscrea, Rathcabbin, Portumna, Terry Glass, Carrig and Riverstown.  We wish Jim well on his new venture and it will be a great service to the Birr and surrounding areas.  If you wish to contact Jim with good ideas feel free to do so on 0863024944.  A very important note for our dancing patrons.  Our dancing time changes from the original 9.30pm start to 10pm start for the summer months only.  This means our dances will start at 10pm and finish at 12.30pm.  Our next dance is on Friday night 3rd May with the Jimmy Hynes band.  7th June Footloose, 5th July Eamon Robinson and The Evergreens, 2nd August Tony Nugent, 6th September Pat Costello, 4th October John Gorman and 1st November Eddie Keogh.  We hope our dancing patrons look forward to our line up of dance bands.  If you need any information on our social dances contact Mattie 0876297761  or Gary 0872848961.  We also hope to circulate info on the parish news bulletins around south Offaly.  We look forward to seeing you at Cloghan Gaa Centre at our dances.

Shannon Gaels and St Broughans served up a very good and exciting game of football on Saturday afternoon in Clonblogue.  St Broughans playing with a stiff breeze in the first half put Shannon Gaels backs under lots of pressure but  with Pat Camon at full back steadying the team and Conor Clancy pulling off two fine saves in the first half kept the half time score 0-5 to 0-6 in favor of St Broughans.  Shannon Gaels got off to the perfect start in the second half with a point by Sean Kenny and a great goal by Stephen Quirke inside five minutes set up Shannon Gaels for a well deserved win.  Final Score: Shannon Gaels 1-12 St Broughans 1-6.  Team: C.Clancy, D.Loonam, D.Flynn, C.Daly 0-1, D.Corbett, E.Conroy, A.Camon 0-1, J.O'Connor 0-2 (1 from a free), A.Tracey, S.Dolan 0-1, S.Kenny 0-3, S.Quirke 1-0, N.Wynne 0-2 (1 from a free), M.Corbett 0-2.  Subs:  P.Guinan for E.Conroy, D.Flynn for A.Tracey.
